After visiting the northern part of the island, we turn south in Laganas Bay Area,  to see another attraction of the island, the Sea Turtle Caretta-Caretta.

The Sea Turtle is an endangered species, because of the pollution and tourism. It is only recently, that for her protection, Laganas and the neighboring locations have been granted the status of “National Marine Park”, protected by International and Greek laws. In the area are not allowed the water sports, while many groups of volunteers are present for the turtle’s wellbeing.

Architecture Heritage

The Island of Zakynthos has a very rich history which is reflected in its Architecture and Building Heritage. Though the big earthquake of 1953 destroyed most of the monuments, the inhabitants strived to reconstruct the buildings in the same way. The few buildings still remaining give a hint of the glorious past. From all the eras, the Venetian period is the most important. The island was under Venetian domination during the middle age, which protected the island from ottoman occupation. During this period the island saw an economic growth and prosperity, the arts and letters flourished which marked the development of architecture, paintings, literature and theater.  The beauty is still visible in magnificent historical squares and street layout, temples, churches, bell towers, museums, arched alleys, neoclassical buildings, balconies, the villas of the nobles in the center and countryside.

One of the monuments that is very important and  very visible from the Port is the cathedral of Saint Dionysios. Though the exterior is very simple, when you enter you are impressed by the rich and colourful frescos and lamps. The building is one of the few that survived the earthquake of 1953 and is dedicated to the patron saint of Zakynthos, Saint Dionysios.
